quick recall team

The Marion County High School academic team recently came away with the district Governor’s Cup championship in a dominant performance that included six first-place finishes.

“This was an exceptional group,” MCHS Academic Team co-coach Kim Hardin said. “Even the last time we won district, we did not have this many kids place [...] I might have been more excited than the kids were.”

Members of the team include: Samuel Cecil, Mandy Courwright, Jeb Hughes, Halee May, Sydnie Mattingly, Hayden Robbins, James Tuttle, Kayla Lancaster, Landon Cambron, Seth Caldwell, Samuel Thompson, Sammy Tate, Zachary Essex, and Andrew Lupachino.

Laurie Followell also coaches the team.

The district competition was modified because of Covid-19 considerations with students completing the written tests at home and the quick recall competition occurring virtually as a moderator read questions to participants through an online video chat.

Hardin said those types of modifications will continue as members advance to the regional Governor’s Cup competition on February 13 and potentially the state competition.

“Even at state, if I have kids who make it to the state [competition], which I feel like we will, it will be virtual,” she said.
